Ground broken for Atlantic Yards project

The Daily News reported (“Cheers, jeers greet Atlantic Yards launch,” 3/12/10) that the reception was mixed for the groundbreaking of the Atlantic Yards project, depending on whether you were for or against it.

Politicians praised the project while demonstrators denounced it.  Gov. David Paterson said the bitterness over the project will disappear after the project becomes economically beneficial.  The Barclays Center, the new home for the New Jersey Nets basketball team, is scheduled to open in 2012.

Opponents blocked traffic on Atlantic Avenue until being dispersed by police.  They also proclaimed March 11, 2010, to be the day Brooklyn‘s soul was destroyed.

I think it is terrible that development has won in this case.  For the sake the supporters, the project better bring about economic benefits for the area.  Meanwhile, hopefully opponents of this project can still fight it.
