The (New York) Daily News reported (“Occupy Wall Street, again,” 1/6/12) that the New York Police Department removed barricades around Zuccotti Park Jan. 10, a day after rights groups demanded the city remove them.
A police spokesman said the department decided the barricades were not needed. They were put up Nov. 15, when the police cleared the park of Occupy Wall Street protesters.
OWS protesters and the New York Civil Liberties Union hailed the barricade removal.
I think this is a good thing. With the protesters no longer staying in the park, there was no need for the barricades. Even so, hopefully the reopened park once again becomes the center of the OWS protest, especially as the 2012 presidential election gets closer.
