The (New York) Daily News reported (“Bear-ly funded OWS now in hibernation,” 1/18/12) that, because it is winter, donations to the Occupy Wall Street movement have decreased but that does not mean the movement is gone.
OWS’s main governing body voted to freeze all new spending, and Pete Dutro, a member of the OWS Finance Committee, said that the movement has lost some steam after members were kicked out of Zuccotti Park by the NYPD before Thanksgiving.
Dutro said that even though there have been complaints by activists over how OWS redistributed some of the donations it received, the movement is not dead.
He said that the movement will make itself known again come spring, especially at the Democratic and Republican party conventions.
I think it is comforting to know that OWS is not completely gone. Hopefully, it can muster the same support this year that it received last year—especially in terms of fundraising. Finally, it would be wise of the Democrats and President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign to harness OWS’s outrage from now until Election Day.
