Dolan submits to deposition over sexual abuse by priests

February 24, 2013

The (New York) Daily News reported (“Grilled,” 2/21/13) that Cardinal Timothy Dolan, of the New York Archdiocese, was questioned by lawyers for people who said they were sexually abused by priests in the Milwaukee area, where he was archbishop from 2002-09.

In a closed-door deposition, Dolan was confronted by lawyers who represent 350 of about 570 people who claim sexual clergy abuse in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. The sealed lawsuits probably range from the 1970s to the present.

The deposition concerned just two of the hundreds of cases, and Dolan welcomed the chance to address the issue. Advocates for survivors of clergy abuse, however, said they hoped the deposition will air the church’s dirty laundry. It was unclear how the questioning would affect Dolan, who will soon vote for a successor to the resigning Pope Benedict XVI.

The deposition was completed Wednesday in New York City, and the lawyers for the victims were forbidden to comment on it.

When Dolan headed the Milwaukee Archdiocese, he promised to end abuse. Lawyers for the alleged victims said the archdiocese hid up to $130 million in assets to avoid lawsuit payouts. The archdiocese filed for bankruptcy in January 2011.

I think it is time for the Roman Catholic Church to punish priests who sexually abuse people. It sends a bad message when the church does nothing about it, as if it is saying that the abuser needs protection more than the victim. Hopefully, Dolan is somehow held responsible for how he handled the abuse cases in Milwaukee and pays a heavy price. Maybe then the church and its clergy will get the message and the victims will find some sense of justice or closure.
